1.  Dr. Verghese Kurien is known as the 'Father of Milk'. He revolutionised the Indian milk production sector. His contribution was important in increasing the prosperity and quality in the field of milk production.

2.  Dr. Varghese Kurien was born on 26 November 1921 in Kozhikode, Kerala. He received his early education in Mithapur and then went to America for middle and higher education and obtained a degree from Maxwell School of Agriculture, Los Angeles.

 3.  One of Kurien's major contributions was his strengthening of the milk production sector through organisational diplomacy and promotion of technology through research and development. He founded the Amul Co-operative Dairy Union of Gujarat, later called Amul, in 1949. Amul's objective was to improve the economic condition and quality of life of the poor milk producers of Gujarat.

 4.  Kurien, through Amul, made Gujarat the most important milk producing state in the country. He not only promoted milk production but he also revolutionised the lives of the farmers of Gujarat.

 5.  Kurien's organisational model of Amul was followed across the country. He created a network across the country, setting up local dairy collectives in many states. This increased milk production in the country and improved the economic condition of farmers.

 6.  Kurien's organisational efficiency and leadership earned him a unique position. He made Amul a global brand and made it an important player in the world market.

7.  Under the leadership of Kurien, Amul launched many major products in the market, including Amul Butter, Amul Milk, Amul Doodh etc.

8.  Varghese Kurien made important contributions to the milk production of Gujarat as well as the Indian agriculture sector. He gave a new direction to Indian agriculture, in which farmers got fair prices for their products and could become economically self-reliant.

9.  Due to Kurien's sustainable plans and his inspirational leadership, the level of milk production in India became higher and the quality improved. He made Amul of Gujarat a leader in the Indian market for milk as well as milk related products. He got Amul recognized for milk, curd, butter, jaggery, and other products.

 10.  Kurien's contribution was not only in raising the quality and standards in the field of milk production, but he also brought a revolution in the society. He used all his powers to empower the farmers and help them get fair prices for their products.

11.   Furthermore, Kurien initiated various social programs for social and economic development in Gujarat. He made extensive arrangements for educational and health facilities in the villages and encouraged farmers to learn new technologies.
